Simple construction of a 2 story Savonius wind turbine

Posted by admin | Posted in Wind Energy | Posted on 24-07-2010

This Savonius started as a single story but then a realized that a second story on a 90 degrees angle would add more torque and less cogging. It also became easier to start at low wind speed. This was my first experiment and it wobbles too much due to lack of balance and one disc not well centered. I glued a threaded alternator belt on the rim of the lowest base and adapted a pulley, for that same thread, to an Ametek. Supposedly I should have a ratio of 1:10 from the base disc of the Savonius and the pulley on the Ametek. With an average of 200RPM I got on the Savonius I would have ~2000RPM on the Ametek. The problem was that with so much wobbling on the Savonius, the base kept kicking the pulley out of alignment. I did milled the base, in place, to make is a perfect circumference but, still the result was not what I expected in terms of output power. The reason for that is because I live inland in Florida and the wind here averages 7MPH at the height the Savonius was installed. I cannot have it higher due to HOA rules. They also do not allow for us to have solar panels on the roof which is a shame as we have 4 solar panels 165W 24V on our back yard.

A basic analysis of the Savonius wind turbine shape

Basic analysis of the Savonius Wind Turbine Shape. I mentioned in the video that at a certain part of the rotation of the turbine that there is practically no collection of the windforce converted to usable power. This however can be overcome by using the “stacked and (angle, 180 degrees rotated) offset” of another Savonius on top of the first one. In a way this is somewhat then like a 4 bladed Savonius that is possible, or a dual Savonius. This will then give 4 pulses per revolution in this configuration. Of course the more you stack, the more weight on the rotation axis support bearings, so then lighter/stronger materials should be considered. In general, the larger the windblades of the Savonius turbine, the larger both the collected/rotation forces and drag forces. The blades can be larger in the horizontal, vertical or both dimensions. The smaller the turbine blades (from the axis to the tip of the blade), the faster the rotation and the less torque force developed. This loss in torque then can be recovered if the blades are made “taller” in the vertical dimension.

vawt.tk or http vawt vertical axis wind turbine hawt green. here is an update for the FAWT Silo prop set01, i tried the fiber blades and my custom made blades, the fiber need 10kmh wind to get them going and my custome blades need 5kmh wind to get them spining. next vid i will spread the blades on the custom propset 01. FAWT SILO is a fixed axis wind turbine but it uses lift based props, i have playing with this idea for few years now in my head, i decided to give it a go, it is at the begining stages and there alot of mods still to be done. the idea is to take the air from horizontal to a downward direction and at the same time is to totally hide the proppeler from view. i am hoping and predicting that it will be 60% effecient VS the HAWT. the first step is to build one 4 times as big where the top and bottom defflectors will be 4 feet in width. i hope you enjoy this video and not shoot me down as much. think diffrent…… wind turbine generator Ametek renewable energy vawt hawt Vertical Savonius diy environment green roof power plans free controller batteries windturbine alternative efficiency efficient electric electricity grid homemade vertical axis goderich ontario wind turbine generator Ametek renewable energy vawt hawt Vertical Savonius diy environment green roof power plans free controller batteries windturbine alternative efficiency efficient grid homemade vertical axis goderich ontario best regards
